Title: Infants’ Brains Are Wired to Learn from Culture: Implications for Social Robots

Bio

Dr. Meltzoff holds the Job and Gertrud Tamaki Endowed Chair at the University of Washington, where he is the Co-Director of the Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences. He received his BA from Harvard and PhD from Oxford. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Dr. Meltzoff is a pioneer in the study of child learning and developmental cognitive science. His discoveries about imitative learning revolutionized our understanding of how children learn prior to language. His collaborative work on the brain correlates of imitation, action coding, and ‘body maps’ in infants has helped to build bridges between brain and behavior. His collaborative work on robotics is yielding new insights into the value of computer modeling for informing theories and mechanisms of cognitive development. His research on how cultural stereotypes shape children’s developing sense of identity is illuminating causes of the gender gap in STEM disciplines. Dr. Meltzoff has published more than 200 scientific papers, and co-authored three books, including The Scientist in the Crib. He is the recipient of prizes including the prestigious MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health for outstanding research, and the Kenneth Craik Research Award from Cambridge University.
